(Spirit Lake)-- The city of Spirit Lake remains on target to transition to an automated garbage pickup system June 4th. That word from City Attorney/Administrator Gregg Owens... PlayStop

"We've been advised that the manufacture of the truck has been done on time and on schedule. We ordered the carts that we'll need for people to put their trash in that will be picked up by the truck, and I'm just waiting for confirmation of the date when those carts will be arriving in Spirit Lake and we can start distribution. Again the plan would be to start distributing those the Tuesday after Memorial Day or a week before. As soon as we have confirmation that they're actually going to arrive and be ready to be distributed then we'll get a more formal announcement out to the public and the media. We'll send out a special mailing so people know when to expect them."

Owens says the city will help residents transition to the new system... PlayStop

"If residents are concerned about having to buy a roll of bags which may be more than they need until the first week of June, they can buy individual bags at city hall in whatever quantity they wish to purchase. That will continue up through and including when we switch over to the new system so there shouldn't be any issue with anybody running short, but we wouldn't want anybody to feel like they bought way too many bags and then not really have anything useful to do with them."

Owens says he hopes to find out tomorrow (Fri.) when the carts will arrive.
